Garlic Harvest

It is sometimes hard to find the time to keep up with the blog. I forgot to document the cherry harvest. We ate most of them and froze some. Bret was the one-man garlic harvester yesterday. This year we grew Spanish Roja, Music, German White and our only soft neck was French Pink. The garlic looks great but is has been very humid so we are hoping they dry well.

Farmer’s Little Helper

Got zucchini?

Got milk?

The blueberries are ready for picking too

14 for the Freezer

After almost 9 weeks the broilers were ready for slaughter. It is hard to believe how fast they grow. Bret, Elena and Larry managed to get all 14 birds ready for transport to our friend’s farm. Bret usually slaughters two or three birds at a time but doing them all at once with help and better equipment was much faster and easier.

Meet Satchmo!

Satchmo has come all the way from Perth, Australia to live with us. He was brought VIP delivery by Larry from Newark Airport. He is adapting very well to farm life. He gets along well with the goats, chickens, cows, Moxie and kids. The cats aren’t too sure about him yet.

First Firefly

We saw the first firefly of the season last night. We are hoping that we had the last frost a couple of nights ago. Bret did a lot of planting yesterday : tomatoes, cucumbers, basil, squash, potatoes, shallots. Last weekend we got the onions, pumpkins, corn and carrots in the ground.

The chicks are here.

Snow in May

We had a frost last night and yesterday it rained and snowed and rained. It looks like spring. The lilacs are blooming, the female humming birds are here and everything is green but it doesn’t feel like spring. We had the first salad from our garden of lettuce thinnings. Bret moved the cows to the lower pasture and they are doing well staying in the fence.

I added a few more photos on the Maple Syrup page of the sugar shack and evaporator. We’ll see if we can get a photo of the pesky porcupine who is chewing on the maple lines. . .

Good Chicken!

Bad Chicken!!

Joanie the Jersey and her adopted calf arrived this afternoon. Chachi (who will from now on be called “meat cow”) was an oops from a local farm and Joanie had the milk to feed him.

Bret has already had to work on the fence. We are hoping we won’t wake up in the morning to cows on the deck.
